Project Unlocks Understanding of Miracle of Mary Texts
“Whatever is human belongs to all human beings” said Mehari Worku, deacon in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, when asked whether he had concerns about this work being organised and housed by an American university.
“People tend to assume that Africa has no written history,” Princeton University Professor Wendy Laura Belcher told me while explaining the Princeton Ethiopian, Eritrean and Egyptian Miracles of Mary (PEMM) project for which she received two National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grants (US government grants) last month.
“This project is a vital part of showing Africa, indeed, has a rich written history,” she said.
The US$625,000 grant will support Belcher’s team of six, including three Ethiopian scholars, in making digitally available hundreds of illuminated manuscripts of Miracles of Mary stories, some dating back seven centuries, to Ethiopic scholars both in Ethiopia and around the world.
